Risk, Resilience & Reinvention
Jim Woodman is an entrepreneur, endurance athlete, and author whose life has been shaped by risk, resilience, and reinvention.
At seventeen, Jim spent a summer in the Honduran rainforest searching for the legendary Ciudad Blanca — an expedition that would become the foundation of his memoir Between Two Jungles. But long before writing his story, he built a career defined by vision and execution.
Jim founded Florida Sports Magazine in 1987, one of the first regional publications dedicated to the growing endurance sports movement. He later founded and led The Active Network (Active.com), helping transform how millions of people register for and engage in sports and events worldwide. Under his leadership, the company grew into a global technology platform and ultimately went public in 2011.
Throughout his career, Jim has built businesses at the intersection of technology, sports, and community — combining instinct, timing, and a deep understanding of human behavior. The same observational skills that once helped him navigate dangerous personalities in the jungle later helped him negotiate boardrooms, partnerships, and venture capital relationships.
A lifelong athlete, Jim grew up as a competitive swimmer, played collegiate water polo, raced bicycles, and completed the Hawaii Ironman in 1982. He continues to train daily, swimming and cycling in San Diego, where he lives with his wife, Janina.
Of all his accomplishments, he is proudest of raising three sons — two now thriving in the business world and the youngest completing his junior year at the University of Texas — grounded in integrity, curiosity, and independence.
Today, Jim is focused on writing, speaking, and developing projects that explore resilience, leadership, and the psychology of survival — in the wilderness and in business. He believes that true success is measured not by wealth, but by character, curiosity, and the ability to adapt when circumstances demand it.
